Ryan's Totally Not Complicated Tournament Idea
Spinnerproof presents: every robot1 from the reboots of both Robot Wars and Battlebots under one Lexan roof to battle it out for the title of Ultimate Champion Or Something.
The main section of the tournament follows a Battlebots style bracket with Ryan and Sam working to assign ‘odds’ for each battle then simulating the results with what will almost certainly be highly contentious results.
Format
- One opening round comprising of 32 1V1 battles and 32 3-way melees to ‘select’ a field of 64, with matches selected by random draw.
- The 64 surviving machines are then placed into a 64 slot bracket, once again by random draw, following this through to its conclusion.
Eligibility - general
- Every robot which fought in a heat of series 8, 9 & 10 of Robot Wars.
- Every robot featured in the main tournament bracket of Battlebots ABC 1&2, plus robots involved in televised/highlighted qualifiers.
- Every robot involved in at least one Discovery Fight Night battle, or a Basement battle on the official Battlebots YouTube.
- Unused reserves are not eligible even if they were involved in exhibitions posted to official YouTube channels (EG Road Rash).
- Competitors in the Robot Wars pilot are also not eligible, nor are competitors which appeared exclusively in Battle of the Stars or International Specials.
Eligibility - fine details
- Robots which have appeared in multiple forms with identical (or versioned) names are only represented once. Examples include Sabretooth, Hypershock, Biteforce, Foxic
- A decision as to which variant will represent them will be made on their first appearance and stuck to thereafter, with the aim of selecting their most effective variant. If all versions are roughly equal, the most recent will be selected. Meta is NOT a consideration. For example:
- Sabretooth - Series 9 (best performing, most reliable)
- Hypershock - ABC2 (it worked, rake)
- Biteforce - Discovery (both versions were Champions, so the most recent is selected even though the original would thrive against big a horizontal)
- Foxic - Series 9 (both were equally ineffective)
- A decision as to which variant will represent them will be made on their first appearance and stuck to thereafter, with the aim of selecting their most effective variant. If all versions are roughly equal, the most recent will be selected. Meta is NOT a consideration. For example:
- Essentially identical robots which have competed under different names - either across competitions or in the same competition - will be entered separately.
- Eg: Invader and Gigabyte, Pulsar and Magnetar.
Procedure - general
- A discussion takes place to ascertain the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two machines when matched against each other, and the impact of possible strategies teams may employ.
- From the discussion, a set of ‘odds’ (1:5, 2:4, 3:3, 4:2, 5:1) for the match are agreed upon.
- A die is rolled to determine a winner, based upon the odds.
- In a match which is agreed as being 4:2, numbers 1, 2, 3 or 4 would be a win for Robot A, 5 or 6 a win for Robot B.
- The winner advances through the bracket, the loser is eliminated.
Procedure - fine details
- When discussing a 3-way melee, one robot is eliminated from contention and a roll takes place between the remaining two, taking into account the influence of the third robot.
- For robots which have interchangeable weaponry, a decision must first be made of what weapon setup they will use.
- Should both robots have multiple weapon setups, decisions should be made from the point of view of each team not knowing what setup their opponents will select.
- Similar consideration should also be given to robots known to have specific armour configurations to counter specific weapon types.
- Robots which failed to work as intended in their televised appearances should be assumed to be working at a level roughly equal to what we can prove to be their ‘best’, based upon their televised appearances and any battles at live events.
- EG: Iron Awe 6’s flipper has worked in live events, so would be assumed to work, whereas Foxic has never really performed better than it did on Robot Wars.
- General patterns of reliability are, however, accounted for as a secondary consideration worth no more than 1 ‘point’ in the odds.
- Discussions will be predicated upon a battle taking place in the first named robot’s ‘home’ arena under their ‘home’ battle rules.
- Entanglement is not allowed in either arena/ruleset, and flames are allowed in both. All arena hazards are present and active active, including House Robots and Fog of War in the Robot Wars arena.
